Over on Reddit’s New Zealand channel [subreddit], user Story_Time noted that there are people on Twitter saying they’ll move to New Zealand if Hillary Clinton is elected.

Usually, most Americans say they’re moving to Canada if their presidential candidate doesn’t win office. Americans would rather live in Canada than live under the leadership of a fellow American with a different set of priorities and values.

And I would venture it is crazy unlikely that any country would take in an American as a refugee just because they don’t like the new Bush or Clinton in office.

Now, what follows is based on an assumption that people who say they are going to move if Hillary wins are Republicans, but I won’t discount Democrats or Independents who may not like her either. But chances are high that people who say they’re moving if Hillary wins are leaning to the right.

If you are a Republican and it so happens that a Democrat wins in 2016, moving to Canada or New Zealand (New Zanada) won’t be a perfect solution. Yes, currently New Zealand has a center-right government: One article by Cameron Stewart in The Weekend Australian Magazine (discovered via a a New Zealand Herald article) even called New Zealand’s government “the most successful and stable centre-right government in the world.” Republicans might like some Kiwi fiscal policies if and when the policy pendulum is swinging to the right.

And yet, even Prime Minister John Key, leader of the center-right National party, said Hillary would be good for future U.S.-NZ relations, according to the Herald. Key has not said that about Rand Paul, to my knowledge.

I just can’t see how a move to New Zealand would satisfy an American conservative values voter. Kiwis’ religious affiliations are dropping, they shake their head at U.S. gun policy, and they are quite happy with their health care system.

Oh. And Kiwis threw a fit when the government agreed to send troops to fight ISIS. Hawks might feel funny here.

If you’re a Democrat and a Democrat wins in 2016, and you don’t like that particular Democrat, I don’t know what to tell you. Now is probably the time to start donating to some PACs.

Edited this afternoon: This post ended up on Reddit, and I should have credited who started the thread instead of calling him or her “a user.” Apologies, Story_Time. I should have used your name instead of “a user” in the first place.

Gonna move abroad if a Bush or a Clinton wins in 2016? Tell me where in the comments.
