About the Blog

Auck Ward is a blog about moving to New Zealand, Auckland specifically. It chronicles an American wife (me) and a Kiwi husband — making a home, career and life in Auckland, after months of packing and tying up loose ends at work, saying “so long” to friends and family in DC, and backpacking through Asia.

Auck Ward sounds like “awkward.” But when “awkward” is revamped and split into two words, it gives the direction of where this couple is traveling and settling for a couple of years.

The photo in the header is Auckland from Waiheke Island. The gorgeous photo is by Juan Parada and has been cropped to fit the header dimensions. It is used under a Flickr Creative Commons license. Parada’s photo can be accessed here: https://flic.kr/p/mWR3sg

I make very concerted efforts to provide accurate information and credit on photos and blog posts. Pictures are taken by me, unless credited otherwise. Many of Kiwi’s photos are featured here. If there is something I missed, I would be happy to edit and or correct. Please email me a message via the Contact page.

I’m Tina Trenkner-Meade and I’m the author of Auck Ward. I spent the last seven years in Washington, D.C. working in the digital departments of newsrooms and think tanks. Now, I reside in Auckland and I work at a newspaper in social media.

I graduated from Northwestern University with a journalism degree and would like some Publix cake right now.

This blog is solely my own thoughts and opinions. This blog does not reflect the opinions of any of my current or past employers.

Where have I been?

In New Zealand, I’ve had the chance to explore a little of Auckland, Northland, the Waikato, the Coromandel, Kapiti, Taupo, Wellington, and Blenheim. Some South Island exploring would address a glaring gap.

Besides the U.S. and New Zealand? 23 countries.

Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, England, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Egypt, Turkey, Qatar, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia.

I hope to expand that list.

    Hi AuckWard,
I am very interested in you and your husbands Spanish connection and search for Spanish in Auckland.
Have you guys been able to come up with any more resources for learning Spanish or connective with other Spanish speakers in Auckland?
I am a Kiwi in my second year of learning Spanish.
    Regards,
    Darren Tolmie
